What is Video Game Design and what does a video game designer do?

Video Game Design is the process of designing almost every aspect of a Video Game. Game Designers are responsible for all of the ideas behind a game, from when the ideas are first conceived to the versions of those ideas present in the final product. Video Game Design typically occurs in the pre-production stage of development, but their ideas are built upon as the project is being developed. Programming knowledge is not necessary to become a Game Designer, but it may be necessary for certain job titles. Careers in Video Game Design typically offer high pay, but have long work hours.

Video Game Designers must be able to quickly and regularly adapt to new technologies. Currently, new technologies such as Virtual Reality (VR), Cloud Gaming, and Augmented Reality (AR) are becoming more sophisticated and are quickly growing in popularity. The development of these new technologies has helped the Video Game industry rapidly grow, so there is high demand for new Game Designers who can show understanding of new technologies and come up with concepts that make use of them. The constant changes present in the Video Game industry may also make it difficult for some people to enter the field, though.
